I always wanted to become a cardiac surgeon so I studied hard, got good grades and went to a math and science magnet high school. I was in all the clubs, 2nd in command of my JROTC battallion., President of my Jack and Jill chapter and Crowned Ms Calendar Girl and Ms JROTC. In college, I was awarded the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honors Scholarship at Xavier University which is #1 in placing minorities in Medical School. I continued to get good grades, stayed out of trouble and worked 2-3 jobs. At the end of my junior year, I became deathly ill. I was the 2nd documented case of Hepatitis A in the state. I learned that there was nothing that the doctors could do for me… I would have to wait until my body healed itself and this could be months. I continued to vomit multiple times per day. I was so tired that I didn’t even have the energy to drag myself to the restroom let alone a shower. I wore the same Gray and white XU t-shirt for at least a week as I was quarantined on the 3rd floor of my aunt’s house. My mother sent a book of natural cures and I read it from cover to cover. I convinced my aunt to gather some things for me and by week 2 I was ready to see the doctor again. My liver function tests were all normal and I was cleared to go back to school and work. I was so excited to tell him what I had done, but he wrote it off and said that it was just cause I was young that I healed so quickly. In the back of the book was listed a school that taught doctors how to treat with natural medicine and gave the Naturopathic Medical Degree. I started inquiring and learned that my father (who had Multiple Sclerosis MS) and who was in remission for 15 yrs was also under the care of an ND. In fact, the whole family during that time was under the care of an ND. I watched my father thrive under the care of a Naturopathic Physician and through my own near death experience and experimenting with natural medicine and seeing that it work I choose to become a Naturopathic Physician.
I earned my Naturopathic Medical Degree (NMD) from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) in Tempe, AZ. While in school, I was the founding V.P. of membership and charter member of the Natural Talkers (a Toastmaster’s International Club), V. President of my class, Student member for the Higher Learning Commission, elected student representative and voting member of the Arizona Naturopathic Medical Association Board of Directors, the FL state representative for Naturopathic Public Awareness Campaign and the first student sales representative for Metagenics in which she developed the ‘Learning Lunch’ concept. I was the recipient of several scholarships including the US Funds Access to Education Scholarship, The Arizona Consortium of Complementary Healing Organizations “Dream” Scholarship, and the Institute for Natural Medicine Scholarship that is awarded to outstanding future leaders in the Naturopathic profession.
I rotated through the Family Medicine Residency Program at Jamaica Hospital before graduating with the degree of Naturopathic Medical Doctor and was awarded the prestigious Daphne Blayden award for my commitment to Naturopathic Medicine, Academic Excellence, Compassion, Perserverance, a Loving Sense of Humor and a Positive, Supportive Outlook by my colleagues and the staff at SCNM.
I was chosen to join the clinical team at The D’Adamo Clinic and completed the first residency with Doctor Peter D’Adamo (Author of the New York Times Best Seller- Eat Right For Your Blood Type). While at The D’Adamo Clinic I was responsible for patient care and education, patient support groups, Blood Type lecture series, Preceptorship/ Externship affiliation with the University of Bridgeport, as well as clinical therapies.
I have been very active in educating the public about Naturopathic Medicine by meeting with Senators, Congress personnel, and CEO’s of hospitals which helped to gain Naturopathic licensure in DC.
I am and always have been quite active within her community. I have served as team leader for Breast Cancer walks, co-organizer of blood drives, and participant in NCCJ and AIDS walks. I have volunteered extensively with the B-Positive (AIDS clinic), Project AIDS AZ, helped in the successful campaign for a smoke-free work environment in Tempe, AZ, the Bridgeport, CT Association of Habitat for Humanity in building their first “Green” house, Naturopathic Medicine for Global Health (Guatemala medical missions trip where I served as a supervising Doctor), Nicaragua (Mission trip), and Cass Corridor (feeding the hungry of Detroit and passing out hygiene kits).
