Mistletoe extract has been used since ancient times to treat many illnesses. It boosts the immune system and can induce apoptosis – the process of natural cell death. This can stop tumor growth.
Healthy tissue is luckily not affected by the natural cell death. In fact, mistletoe extract protects the DNA of immune cells and other healthy cells against damage against specific drugs. Therefore, side effects of chemotherapy can be reduced.
Mistletoe extract has been shown to kill cancer cells and to positively affect the immune system. Mistletoe extracts are usually given by injection under the skin, but can be injected into a vein, into the pleural cavity, or even into the tumor itself.
A mistletoe therapy study was published in the May 2011 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. This study showed that individuals who took mistletoe extract in addition to their standard medical treatment for cancer lived 40% longer. Additional studies have also showed that mistletoe has low toxicity and a positive impact on the patients’ overall quality of life.
Unfortunately, the United States and Europe both have very differing attitudes towards mistletoe therapy. Europe has used mistletoe extract for the past 90 years and it is no longer considered to be controversial. The use of mistletoe extract is pretty much still unknown in the United States, but luckily becoming more popular.
Mistletoe therapy has been shown to improve resistance to infection, improve sleep, and lessen pain for individuals with cancer. Fatigue, particularly during and after chemotherapy, is less severe for patients. Nausea during chemotherapy is also reduced. Mistletoe extract stimulates the appetite, so the body gains new energy as well.
Mistletoe raises the patient’s body temperature slightly, which warms their body. Many cancer patients have a low average body temperature and easily feel cold, so this helps with that. Mistletoe extract also lessens sensitivity to pain, so fewer painkillers and sedatives are needed. Patients often report a more positive outlook on life, feel more courage and initiative, and less fear after getting this treatment.
