If you’re looking for relief from chronic sinus or allergy complications, Neti Pot treatment may be the therapy for you.
Though the technique may look unusual, the outcome has been proven effective for centuries. Originating in India, this nasal irrigation method uses warm salt water facilitated through the use of a Neti Pot to help flush the nasal passages, allowing for easier breathing and relief from sinus complications.
HOW IT WORKS
Neti which directly translates to “nasal cleansing” works by moisturizing the nasal cavity, and removing any unwanted debris mucus, and airborne allergens in the nasal passage. The Neti Pot allows for constant flow of water from one nostril out the other, preventing debris from re-entering the nose while being treated.
WHERE TO BUY A NETI POT
A Neti Pot is usually made of glass, metal, plastic, porcelain or ceramic, and can be purchased either online, at Whole Foods, Walmart, Walgreens, or other health or wellness facilities.
TREATMENT STEPS
This simple and effective treatment can be carried out through use of the following items:
- Table salt
- Sterile or purified warm water
- Neti Pot
- Box of tissues
The Neti Pot treatment can be uncomfortable if not properly facilitated. It is important to begin each treatment with a clean, dry Neti Pot as this helps prevent risk of infection or irritation. As a rule of thumb: for each 250ML of water used, you will want to add ½ a teaspoon of salt to ensure proper cleansing of each nasal passage.
- Start by filling the Neti Pot with warm distilled or purified water, between the temperatures of 85-95 degrees.
- Then add 1/2 -1 teaspoon of table salt to the water and mix thoroughly
- Lean forward over the sink, and turn your head to one side making sure your forehead and chin are at roughly the same height
- Insert the Neit Pot spout in the nostril facing upward, making sure it fits comfortably yet sealed
- Slowly raise the Neti Pot so the water begins to pour from the upper nostril out of the lower nostril. It may not happen immediately, adjusting your head may be necessary.
- THROUGHOUT THIS ENTIRE PROCESS IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO BREATH THROUGH YOUR MOUTH NOT YOUR NOSE.
- Empty about half of the water from the Neti Pot through one nostril
- Set the Neti Pot down, pick up a tissue and blow forcefully
- Repeat steps 3-8 on the other nostril
- Make sure to clean the Neti Pot thoroughly before placing it away
This simple treatment can be performed on individuals ages 5 and up, and can really help flush and moisturize your nasal passages during the dry, cold weather. I highly recommend this treatment for those suffering from seasonal allergies, common cold, and sinus congestion. So be proactive, and let this treatment work for you today!
